“You can create your dream life if you believe in yourself & show up every day to do the work.”
Creating beautiful imagery, learning from powerhouses in the industry, and meeting the best people. These are the thoughts that come to mind when I look back on my time at EVOKE WORKSHOPS last November in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.
We started the week off with doing headshots and learning about the beast of it all…INSTAGRAM! Abby Jiu taught us how to attract our ideal clients through the platform that defeats so many of us. It’s true; we all love it and hate it at the same time. But we need to learn the ins and outs with it to grow our businesses and to help create a more personal relationship with our clients.
Elizabeth from East Made Co, aka QUEEN of all Flatlays taught you guessed it… FLATLAYS! I’m not going to lie, Elizabeth was the main reason I paid to go to this workshop. I have spent years studying her work and teaching myself the science behind this skill, and our brides adore the designs I create for their galleries. So having the opportunity to meet and learn from her was the best! And those Jimmy Choo heels were icing on the cake!
The next day was all about bridal and couple poses and portraiture taught by Heather Payne and Megan Lee. Soiree by Souleret events created a stunning yet straightforward luxurious scene for us attendees to work with. Something that was told to us early on was if you want the big-budget clients, you have to show that you can be trusted with little so you can be trusted with a lot. That advice kept repeating itself in my mind when we worked with these models on the white backdrop. Even with working with professional models having only a white backdrop to work with poses its challenges because it doesn’t give you any room to hide. It’s just you, the model, and your skill. This is a necessary obstacle for each photographer to experience. In my opinion, at least. 😉
After all of that, we said our goodbyes, and I grabbed the goodies that were gifted to me (an olive and oak mat, and a custom sugar flower cake from Alex Robba Cake ) and made my way home from Pittsburg to Lancaster.
All in all, it was a great experience, and I am looking forward to going to more workshops in the future!
